GUINO
A syringe casing that masquerades syringes as a charming
penguin character, helping to relieve needle anxiety in children.
Problem
Vaccines have become necessary to the decrease in the spread of COVID-19 and many people aren't recieving the doses because of needle anxiety.
Needle fear is extremely common, affecting up to 50% of adolescents and 25% of adults, leading 16% to avoid getting vaccinations.
Opportunity
Opportunity lies in creating a product that decreases anxiety around needles and increases the likelihood for users to routinely receive vaccinations.

Guino makes getting vaccines more comfortable.
The charming penguin character holds the syringe in place, disguised as a beak, removing the visual aspect of needle anxiety.
The body of Guino is opaque, so patients are unable to see the needle, while nurses are able to correctly place it.
Injections are concealed, but still accurately administered.
The semi-transparent base allows nurses to see the placement of the needle as it's injected.
The wings have designated finger holes for stabilizing the syringe and casing, while maintaining the muscle memory of administering a vaccine. With the silicone topper, the plunger is still functional and fully controlled.

Ideation
The product must allow nurses to accurately administer the vaccine doses with high visibility in needle placement, total control over plunger speed, and still keep the syringe totally concealed.
To make Guino more viable in the pediatric market, novelty became the primary focus of the aesthetic design for the syringe casing.
Iteration
After working through different novelty characters, function was iterated on for ease of control.
Finger holes were added to stabilize grip on the needle and preserve muscle memory.
Multiple different designs revolved around plunger placement, ranging from exposed plunger, plastic cover, slide mechanism, and silicone casing.
