MUUTOS

A quick-change triathlon prosthetic designed specifically for
lower leg amputees.
Problem

Lower leg amputees already have disadvantages in triathlon competitions when it comes to balance and available leg power.

These athletes also experience time disadvantages as they must transition not only the necessary gear for the three legs of the race but also must transition their foot attachments.

Opportunity

Opportunity lies in creating a prosthetic that saves lower leg amputees time in the transition periods of triathlon races.

Muutos is designed specifically for athletes.

The water-resistant silicone sleeve is created to wick off water during the swim portion of triathlons and maintain friction during endurance biking and running.

The carbon fiber socket is breathable but incredibly durable to hold up through long training sessions and Ironman-distance races.

A secure, quick-change mechanism is a must.

The combination of a pin-lock and twist-in mechanism offers athletes peace of mind so they can mentally invest 100% in their race.

Only the lower half of Muutos is changed out for the fastest transition times possible. Each interchangeable "foot" is supported with steel and carbon fiber.

Ideation

The most difficult part of this project was understanding the interworkings of prosthetics with a short timeline of 10 days from research to presentation.

Researching on-market prosthetic locking mechanisms and tweaking them to apply to a quick-change system was the first step in ideation.

The different attachments had to also be designed specific to a triathlete's need for the swim, bike, and run portions of the race.

Iteration

Socket design in regards to aesthetics and function was the next step in this rapid development process; different materials, features, designs, and attachment points are displayed.

Lower leg amputees are barred from using prosthetic attachments during the swim portion of the race.

To combat this, an air chamber was iterated upon to allow athletes the ability to adjust bouancy to match their other leg. Although it won't aid with power, it does help balance out the body and save energy for the swim.
